Madarao boasts numerous trails, including sections of the Shinetsu and Amatomi trails, which transform in winter into pristine paths through silent forests and open vistas. Snowshoeing is the perfect way to immerse yourself in this magical environment, offering unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
This tour is suitable for all skill levels, from first-timers to experienced hikers. No previous experience is required, and all necessary equipment—snowshoes and poles—is provided. Tour Details
Starting Time: Choose any time between 9:00 and 13:00.
Duration: The standard snowshoeing tour lasts 2–3 hours, depending on the chosen location.
Pick-up/Drop-off: Complimentary service for guests staying within the Madarao and Myoko area.
Itinerary:
- Meeting and Briefing (30 minutes): Meet your English-speaking guide at the designated location. Equipment will be checked and fitted for all participants.
- Snowshoeing (2–3 hours): Explore the trails and learn about the natural and cultural history of the region.
- Equipment Return: Conclude the tour by returning the snowshoes and poles.
Locations
We offer a variety of routes that can be customized based on your group’s preferences and available time.
Madarao
- Peaks: Explore the summits of Hakamadake (1,135m) or Kenashiyama (1,022m) for stunning views.
- Lakes: Walk around the serene Akaike or Nozomi Lake.
- Technical Hike: Start from the Madarao-no-yu hot springs and ascend to Madarao’s peak (1,381m) and Daimyojin-dake (1,360m). Enjoy breathtaking vistas of Lake Nojiri, Mt. Myoko, Mt. Kurohime, and Mt. Izuna.
Satoyama Experience
Begin at a kominka (traditional folk house) and follow a gentle trail leading to the shores of Lake Nojiri for an authentic satoyama adventure.
Togakushi
Stroll along the majestic 400-year-old cedar-lined avenue leading to the historic shrines of Togakushi. The trail includes a frozen lake and sites where ancient mountain ascetics practiced their craft.
Naena Waterfall
Admire the impressive 55m Naena Waterfall, located in the Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park. Known as the “earthquake waterfall,” it is framed by towering basalt cliffs, with thunderous water crashing over large boulders below. It is also recognized as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls.
