While skiing in Japan is synonymous with easy access to fluffy powder snow, hence the term Japow (Japan Powder), it’s important to understand a few things to avoid disappointments when skiing here:

  • You are traveling for skiing or snowboarding, not only for powder. While natural snow is guaranteed at all the resorts we operate and snowmaking is not really required in Japan, sometimes there is not enough snow off-piste to enjoy powder, no matter what our guides try to find. On those days, just enjoy a great day of skiing on slopes groomed to perfection, where Japanese craftsmanship can be appreciated in the perfect corduroy of the snow.
  • It does not snow constantly in Japan’s snow areas, and it’s difficult to establish which areas receive more snow. Lower temperatures in the Hokkaido/Tohoku areas mean longer seasons, but shorter seasons in other areas translate into better snow averages during peak season. Altitude is increasingly playing an important role, with higher terrain in Nagano/Niigata registering more snowfalls that last longer. Finally, atmospheric patterns such as El Niño and La Niña can also impact the season.
  • While peak “Japow” season is January and February, there might be some days with no snow, rain, or moderate temperatures that can melt the snow. In some seasons, March has registered more snowfall than January, so, if you stay for one week in Japan, you are rolling the dice. If you are lucky, you can score your dream powder lines; if not, you can still have fun discovering great ski resorts.
  • While we track the snow storms daily to offer the best snow conditions in the areas we operate based on our experience, it is important to be realistic. If the tour is based in Nagano, it is not possible to drive 3-4 hours to chase better conditions in Tohoku.

In conclusion, powder snow is that elusive condition that we are all tirelessly chasing. If it were so easy to find, we would lose interest. Instead, we strive each day to find that perfect line to float magically, which we as skiers/riders live for.
