Our backyard: Five Mountains of Northern Shinshu

The Five Mountains of Northern Shinshu (Japanese: 北信五岳 Hokushin Gogaku) is the traditionally referred area between northern Nagano and Niigata, encompassing the Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park and the five peaks of Mt. Iizuna (飯縄山 1,917m), Mt. Togakushi (戸隠山 1,904m), Mt. Kurohime (黒姫山 2,053m), Mt. Madarao (斑尾山 1,381m), and Mt. Myoko (妙高山 2,454m).

This region is perhaps the area with the most snowfall in all of Japan. Cold wind currents from Siberia cross the Sea of Japan, accumulating moisture. When these winds reach the coast of Joetsu and funnel into the valley surrounded by the five mountains, they are unable to rise above the high peaks, resulting in tremendous snowfall unique to this area.

Our flagship ski package. Stay with us at La Colina Retreat and discover the privilege of having more than 20 ski resorts within 1h drive, and many more mountains to explore. This package caters to advanced skiers who wish to experience as much powder as possible in a variety of on-piste and off-piste terrain; or intermediate skiers and boarders who want to experience “japow” and improve their freeride technique.
