It is the last week of August in Myoko and Madarao in Nagano. The pines are heavy with summer green, cicadas are doing their best to out-sing each other, and snow is the furthest thing from most people’s minds. But for those of us who live for the Madarao powder season, this quiet, sun-drenched stretch of autumn is exactly when the best trips of winter are quietly won. The guests who chase the deepest, lightest Japow of the season with us every January and February did not stumble into it in December — they planned it now, while the slopes were still empty of snow and full of possibility.

Why August and September Are the Real Powder Booking Window

The local secret that surprises almost every first-timer is that Japanese ski resorts — including our own Madarao and Tangram, Myoko and Nozawa — do not fully open until around Christmas, and lift quotas for the choice January and February weeks go fast long before the first flakes fall. Peak season here in the Madarao–Myoko–Nozawa pocket of Nagano is genuinely hard to book: many hotels only hold their rooms until a specific autumn deadline, and our best guides already see their calendars fill for the deep mid-winter windows.

So if you have been quietly dreaming of a Japow season — light, champagne-powder days, empty tree lines, and no lift queues — the smartest thing you can do is lock in your dates now, while availability, and often pricing, are still on your side. Getting your deposit in early lets you choose the exact week you want rather than taking whatever is left. You can see what a week with us looks like on our Powder Belt package, or plan a more flexible guided day tour. If you prefer to organise it yourself, the official Madarao Mountain Resort site is a great place to start for lift tickets and resort info.

Know Your ‘Madapow’: What Makes This Corner of Japan Different

Locals have a nickname for the snow that falls over the Madarao–Tangram area — we call it ‘Madapow’. It is the dry, impossibly light powder that Japan is famous for, but with a personality all its own: more than sixty percent of the terrain around here stays ungroomed, which means that after a good snowfall, the tree lines are where the magic happens. Riders who love steep, absorbing tree runs and playful, pillow-and-roll terrain will feel right at home. The two interconnected resorts, Madarao Mountain and Tangram Ski Circus, are what make this pocket of Nagano so special.

Because we are a small, local operation rather than a big resort company, we pick the day’s mountain on the morning itself. Our guides read the daily weather and avalanche forecasts and choose the resort with the best snow for that exact day — a Madapow freeride line, a backcountry touring finish, or a relaxed resort powder tour — and hand every guest a daily conditions bulletin. It is the difference between hoping for powder and chasing it with certainty.

Three Habits to Build Now for a Stronger Season

1. Get your body ready while nobody is watching

Freeriding and ski touring are leg and core sports, and nothing taxes them like deep powder. Even two short sessions a week of squats, lunges, box steps and a little balance work over the next four months will make your first pow day of the season feel dramatically better. Your knees will thank you in March.

2. Sort your gear early — and skip the rental rush

If you are planning to bring your own skis or board, check your bindings, get your edges done and your bases waxed now. If you are thinking about taking advantage of our La Colina Gear rental fleet, chatting with us at the start of the season means we can reserve exactly the right width and profile for you.

3. Book your guides and lessons before the calendar fills

Our guides are local mountain people who know every hidden face of this region, but there are only so many of them, and peak season books out. Whether you want a relaxed resort powder tour, a proper freeride day in the trees, or a first taste of backcountry touring, reserving your spot early is the single best way to protect your winter plans.

A Fire-Side Plan for Your Best Winter Yet

Here is what we would suggest: decide your ideal week for January or February powder, send us a note, and let us hold it for you. We will help you choose the right guided days, sort out gear, and arrange the lift passes and transfers that make everything easy. Then you can let the season drift toward you through the autumn, knowing your best powder days are already secured.
